Did you know that the tallest sand castle ever built was as high as a six story building? In 2021, an international team of sculptors spent three and a half weeks shaping 5,000 tons of sand into a castle 70 feet high.
Some of the bystanders wondered, “Why invest all of that time, money, and hard work into something that the wind and the waves will eventually sweep away?”
That’s a good question for you and me to answer as well. Every day we step into the world and build sand castles. Some represent our jobs. Some our marriages. Some our families and our communities. Hopefully, if the weather holds, what we build will last a long time and bless a lot of people.
But of this you can be certain: time always wins. Even the greatest sand castles are eventually claimed by the tide. While that’s sobering to consider, there’s a thread of hope woven through it. Our sand castles won’t last, but they can be infused with transcendent values that will.
A good marriage, for example, ends when a spouse dies, but its influence lives on through the couple’s children and grandchildren – for generations. The same could be said for the legacy of a good parent, a good neighbor, or a good citizen.
Jesus said, “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:20-21).
Everything you and I do is merely a snapshot in time. Here today. Gone tomorrow. And yet, it can endure – by infusing it with faith, meaning, and purpose.
